Can You Spike in Pickleball? Yes — Here's the Catch

Last updated: July 2026

It's legal almost everywhere on the court except one specific spot.

QUICK ANSWER

Yes, spiking (an overhead smash hit downward with power) is legal on any shot except the serve, which has to be underhand. The one real restriction: you can't smash a ball while standing in the kitchen unless it's already bounced. So if you're at the net and a weak, high ball floats over your shoulders, smash away — just make sure your feet (and your momentum) aren't in the kitchen when you make contact.

Short answer: yes, with one restriction

Spiking is completely legal in pickleball. The only shot that has to be underhand is the serve — after that, once the double bounce rule has been satisfied, you can hit the ball overhand as hard as you want, including a full overhead smash on a ball that floats up above your shoulders.

The restriction people actually run into: you can't smash the ball while you're standing in the kitchen, unless the ball has already bounced. This is just the normal kitchen/volley rule applied to a power shot instead of a soft one — the ball has to bounce before you can hit it out of the air from inside the non-volley zone, whether that shot is a gentle dink or a full smash.

When a spike actually makes sense

The classic spike opportunity: you're at the kitchen line, your opponent hits a weak, high ball — usually a mistimed dink or a lob that doesn't clear you — and it sits up above your shoulders. That's the moment to load up and hit down on it, aiming for open court or right at your opponent's feet or hip where they can't get their paddle down in time.

Where people get into trouble is chasing a spike on a ball that isn't actually sitting up enough. Smashing a ball at chest height instead of above your shoulders usually just gives your opponent a flat, predictable ball back — save the spike for the shots that are genuinely floating.

Watch your feet, not just your shot

Because a spike involves a bigger swing than a dink, it's easier to let your momentum carry a foot into the kitchen after contact — which is a fault, same as it would be on any other volley. If you're smashing from right on the kitchen line, that follow-through discipline matters more here than on almost any other shot.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it illegal to hit overhand in pickleball?

No, only the serve has to be underhand. Every other shot in a rally — including a full overhead smash — can be hit overhand once the double bounce rule has been satisfied.

Can you spike the ball while standing in the kitchen?

Only if the ball has already bounced. Smashing a ball out of the air while touching the kitchen is a fault, exactly like volleying a soft dink would be.

What's the best situation to spike in pickleball?

A ball that floats up above your shoulder height at the kitchen line — usually a mistimed dink or a short lob. Smashing a ball at chest height or lower usually just gives your opponent an easy, flat return.
