1. "Let serves" don't exist anymore
USA Pickleball dropped the let-serve rule in 2021. If a serve clips the net and lands in, it's live — play it. Half the courts in America are still arguing about this because it used to be true and old habits stick.
2. You can absolutely stand in the kitchen
New players sometimes avoid the kitchen entirely like it's out of bounds. It's not. You can stand in it, walk through it, hit groundstrokes from inside it — the only thing you can't do is volley while touching it.
3. Double hits aren't automatically a fault
If the ball taps your paddle twice during one continuous swing, that's legal. It only becomes a fault if you take a second, separate swing at it.
4. Your paddle can cross the net
As long as the ball is still on your opponent's side, you can reach over the net to hit it, as long as you don't touch the net itself or interfere with your opponent before they've hit it. What you can't do is touch the net with your body or paddle at any point during a live rally.
5. Only the serving team scores
This trips up anyone coming from tennis or volleyball, where either side can score. In pickleball, winning a rally while receiving just gets you the serve — not a point. That's side-out scoring.
6. A ball on the line is IN
Same as tennis — any part of the ball touching the line counts as in bounds. You have to clearly see space between the ball and the line to call it out. When in doubt, it's in.
7. Momentum into the kitchen still counts
You can legally volley a ball from behind the kitchen line and still fault if your momentum carries your foot into the kitchen afterward. Clean contact isn't enough — where you end up matters too.
