Rules & Scoring

These are the most-searched pickleball rules questions. For the official rulebook, see USA Pickleball.

What is the kitchen rule in pickleball?

The kitchen (Non-Volley Zone or NVZ) is the 7-foot area on each side of the net. You cannot volley (hit the ball out of the air) while standing in the kitchen or touching the kitchen line. You CAN step into the kitchen to hit a ball that has bounced. Momentum carrying you into the kitchen after a volley is a fault. This is the #1 most confusing rule for beginners.

Can you step in the kitchen in pickleball?

Yes — but only to hit a ball that has bounced first. You may not volley from inside the kitchen. You may not touch the kitchen line while volleying. After a volley, your momentum cannot carry you into the kitchen. Best kitchen paddles here.

How does pickleball scoring work?

Games to 11 points, win by 2. Only the serving team scores. Server calls score as three numbers: serving team score, receiving team score, server number (1 or 2). In doubles, each team gets two serves (except first serve of game = one serve). Beginner guide with scoring cheat sheet.

What are the serving rules?

Underhand serve only (paddle below waist at contact). Serve diagonally cross-court. Must clear the kitchen line (landing in kitchen = fault). Feet behind baseline at contact. One serve attempt (no lets in 2026). Drop serve is legal (drop ball, hit after bounce).

What is a fault in pickleball?

Ball hits net on serve (unless let on drop serve). Ball lands out of bounds. Volley from kitchen. Ball bounces twice before return. Wrong server/receiver. Touching net/net post. Hitting ball before it crosses net.

What pickleball paddle should I buy?

Depends on your level and budget. Beginner: Enhance EPP Turbo ($99.99 w/ PRH) — first foam under $100, 1-yr warranty. All-court: Honolulu J2CR Crystal Blue ($175 w/ PRH) — best overall. Control/Arm issues: Honolulu J2NF ($175 w/ PRH). Budget: Vatic V-SOL Pro Flash ($99.99 w/ PRH). What is the best pickleball paddle for beginners?

Enhance EPP Turbo ($99.99 w/ PRH). Foam core = consistent feedback, no dead spots, grit lasts 3-4x longer, no core crush. 1-year warranty + 14-day trial. Hybrid alternative: Vatic V-SOL Pro Flash ($99.99 w/ PRH). Full guide: Best Beginner Paddles June 2026.

Foam core vs honeycomb paddle — which is better?

Foam core wins in 2026. Uniform response (no dead spots), grit lasts months not weeks, no core crush, better dwell = more control+spin. Honeycomb = more pop day 1 but degrades fast. All our top picks are foam. Deep dive: Best Foam Core Paddles June 2026.

What weight pickleball paddle should I use?

Swing weight (SW) matters, not static weight. Target: Beginners/seniors/arm issues 105-112 SW, Intermediates 112-116 SW, Advanced 115-120 SW, Elite 118+ SW. A 7.8 oz head-heavy paddle can feel heavier than 8.2 oz handle-light. Full guide with tested SW for every paddle: Paddle Weight Guide June 2026.

What grip size do I need?

Most adults: 5.3" (standard) or 5.5" (large). Measure from middle crease of palm to tip of ring finger. Smaller grip (5.3") = more wrist snap = more spin/control. Thicker grip = less wrist = less control but more comfort. Add overgrip to build up. All our reviewed paddles list exact grip size.

How long does a pickleball paddle last?

Foam core: 12-24 months at 3x/week play. Honeycomb: 2-6 months before core crush/grit wear. Raw carbon face texture lasts longer than painted/textured faces. Warranty: Enhance 1yr, Honolulu 1yr, Vatic 1yr, Selkirk lifetime (Boomstik), Diadem lifetime core. Replace when: dead spots appear, grit smooths, feel changes, core sounds hollow.

Do expensive paddles make a difference?

Diminishing returns after $180. $99.99 foam paddles outperform $200 honeycomb from 2 years ago. Premium ($175-333) gives: better consistency at edges, longer grit life, pro-validated shapes, better feel. But technique > equipment. Spend $100 on paddle, $50 on lessons, $50 on court time.

Strategy & Play

These questions come from players ready to level up.

Singles vs doubles — what is different?

Singles: One player per side, full court coverage, only server scores, serve from right when score even/left when odd. Doubles: Two per side, kitchen strategy dominant, both players serve (except game start), complex positioning. Paddle difference: Singles needs elongated (16.5") for reach. Doubles prefers hybrid (16") for hands speed. Singles guide: Best Singles Paddles June 2026.

What is a reset shot in pickleball?

A soft, controlled shot from the transition zone or kitchen that lands in opponent's kitchen, neutralizing their attack. Essential skill for 3.5+. Low swing weight paddles (Ripple R2 107 SW, Quanta R4 104 SW) make resets easier. Drill: Practice dropping drives into kitchen from mid-court.

Where should I stand on the court?

Serve: Behind baseline. Return: 2-3 feet behind baseline. After return: Move to kitchen line ASAP ("get to the line"). At kitchen: Toes 1-2" behind line. Partner covers middle. In transition: Split step, be ready to move forward or back. Never stay in 'no man's land' (between baseline and kitchen).

How do I hit a better serve?

Consistency > Power. Hit deep to backhand. Mix heights (high arc, low drive). Use drop serve for consistency (legal 2026). Target: 80% in, 20% aggressive. Practice 50 serves/day. Paddle: Mid SW (112-116) gives serve control + power.

Getting Started

New to pickleball? Start here.

How do I start playing pickleball?

1) Get a beginner paddle (Enhance EPP Turbo $99.99 w/ PRH). 2) Court shoes (tennis/pickleball specific — running shoes roll ankles). 3) Find courts: Pickleheads or USAP places2play. 4) Learn rules (this FAQ). 5) Play with beginners first. 6) Consider 1-2 lessons.

Do I need lessons?

Yes — 1-2 lessons saves months of bad habits. Focus on: grip, ready position, dink technique, serve/return, kitchen rules. Group lessons $20-40, private $60-100. Many courts offer free beginner clinics. YouTube: PrimeTime Pickleball, Briones Pickleball.

What should I wear?

Court shoes (non-negotiable — running shoes cause injuries). Moisture-wicking shirt/shorts. Hat/visor for sun. Sweat towel. Water. Optional: paddle grip towel, lead tape, overgrips.

Health & Injury

Pickleball injuries are rising with participation. Prevention > treatment.

Best paddle for tennis elbow?

Honolulu J2NF ($175 w/ PRH) — softest foam, 9.4/10 forgiveness, max dwell. Vatic V-SOL Pro Flash ($99.99 w/ PRH) — EVA perimeter dampens vibration, 9.4/10 maneuverability. Cyclotron Alea 001 ($161 w/ PRH) — designed for arm health. Full guide: Best Tennis Elbow Paddles June 2026.

Can paddle choice help with arthritis?

Yes. Foam cores (EPP, multi-density, Refoam) absorb impact shock. Honeycomb transmits shock directly. Switch to foam core + add overgrip + low SW (<112) = measurable joint pain reduction for most. Best: J2NF, Alea 001, Ripple R2.

How do I prevent wrist pain?

1) Use smaller grip (5.3") + overgrip for cushion. 2) Low SW paddle (<112). 3) Two-handed backhand = less wrist load. 4) Warm up 10 min (wrist circles, band work). 5) Don't muscle the ball — use legs/core. 6) If pain >2/10 after play: see PT, switch to softer foam.

Common pickleball injuries

Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) — #1. Shoulder impingement. Wrist tendinitis. Achilles/calf strains (sudden starts/stops). Knee meniscus (lunging). Prevention: proper shoes, warm-up, foam paddle, technique lessons, strength training 2x/week.
