The court doesn't change — the rules around serving do
Unlike tennis, pickleball uses the exact same 20x44 court, same net height, and same kitchen dimensions whether you're playing singles or doubles. What changes is how serving works. In doubles, both players on a team get a turn to serve before the ball goes to the other team (except that first server exception at the start of the game). In singles, there's no second server at all — you serve, and the moment you lose a rally, it's an immediate side-out to your opponent.
Your score tells you where to stand
In singles, positioning is simple once it clicks: if your score is even (0, 2, 4...), you serve and receive from the right side. If it's odd (1, 3, 5...), you're on the left. There's no partner to coordinate with, so this is entirely on you to track.
Why the strategy is almost a different sport
- Singles rewards depth and endurance — you're covering all 20 feet of width by yourself, so a deep serve that pushes your opponent behind the baseline is a real weapon.
