What to Bring to a Pickleball Tournament: The Checklist (2026)
Last updated: October 2026
Paddle approval, a backup, shoes, eyewear, grips, food and the small things you only forget once.
Bring a paddle that is approved for the event and a backup of the same model if you can, court shoes (and non-marking soles indoors), eyewear, two or three spare overgrips, a towel, plenty of water, easy snacks, layers, sun protection, and a folding chair for the waits between matches. Before the day, check which paddle approval the event requires, which ball it uses, the format and your check-in time. Practice with the tournament ball for a couple of weeks if you can.

Before the day
- Check your paddle approval. Find out which list the event uses and confirm your exact model is on it. A paddle can be USAP approved, UPA-A approved, both or neither. See USAP vs UPA-A explained.
- Find out the ball. Events announce their ball. Practice with it so the speed is not a surprise.
- Read the format. Round robin, pool play into brackets, or double elimination all change how long your day is.
- Know your check-in time and the venue. Arrive early enough to warm up.
- Plan with your partner: who plays which side, and a simple plan for serve and return.
The packing checklist
- Paddle, approved for the event.
- Backup paddle, ideally the same model and weight. Paddles crack and grips tear, and you do not want to switch feel mid-event.
- Court shoes, plus non-marking soles for indoor venues. Spare socks.
- Eyewear, with a clear or low-light lens for indoor courts.
- Two or three overgrips and the finishing tape.
- Towel for sweat and grip.
- Water, more than you think, plus an electrolyte drink on hot days.
- Snacks that are easy to eat between matches: fruit, bars, a sandwich.
- Layers for cold mornings and air-conditioned gyms.
- Sun protection: hat or visor and sunscreen for outdoor events.
- A folding chair and some shade if the venue is outdoors.
- Small kit: phone charger, bandages, a spare shoelace, a pen.
On the day
- Warm up before your first match, not during it. A short routine is in our 10-minute warm-up routine.
- Eat a little and drink between every match, even when you do not feel like it.
- Change the overgrip if it gets slick. A dry handle helps you keep a loose grip on touch shots.
- Check the draw and court assignments often. Matches can move.
- Film a match if you can. It is the best way to see what to work on before the next event.
