A flat-top pickleball paddle is a hybrid-shaped paddle whose top edge is squared off instead of curved.
Keeping the face full into the top corners puts more face and more mass toward the tip. In both flat-top and rounded-top pairs we have measured, the flat top swings about 4 points heavier at almost the same static weight: RPM Q2 Hybrid Flat Top 112 against 108 for the Q2 Rounded-Top, and 11SIX24 Ultre Power 2 115.15 against 111 for the curved-top Vapor Power 2. That means more plow on drives and slightly slower hands. The best flat-top hybrid for most players is the RPM Q2 Hybrid Flat Top 16mm, $212.49 with code PRH. For spin and a two-handed backhand, take the 11SIX24 Ultre Power 2 at $199.99 with PRH, if you can play UPA-A events. The new Vatic V-Sol Tour Flash FT is USAP approved but not priced yet.

What a flat top is
A hybrid sits between an elongated and a widebody: longer than a widebody, wider than an elongated. Brands sell that footprint two ways. A rounded-top (or curved-top) hybrid narrows into an arc across the top. A flat-top hybrid runs the top edge straight across and turns tight corners, so the face stays close to full width almost all the way up. The easiest place to see it is inside one line. RPM sells the Q2 Hybrid Flat Top and the Q2 Hybrid Rounded-Top on the same Q2 foam at the same price. 11SIX24 did the same with the flat-top Ultre Power 2 and the curved-top Vapor Power 2. Vatic now has a flat-top Tour Flash FT next to its curved-top Tour Flash.
What a flat top changes
- More face near the top. Squaring the corners keeps hitting surface where a rounded top tapers away, so contact high on the face still lands on paddle.
- More mass toward the tip, so a heavier swing. RPM Q2: Flat Top 112 swing weight against 108 for the Rounded-Top (RPM lists the Rounded-Top at 110.5). 11SIX24: Ultre Power 2 115.15 against 111 for the Vapor Power 2.
- Almost the same static weight. Q2 Flat Top 7.8 oz against 7.74 oz. Ultre about 8.02 oz against 7.9 oz. The scale barely moves; the weight moves up the face.
- Twist weight is close on paper. Q2 Flat Top 6.3 against 6.2 in lab measurement for the Rounded-Top (RPM lists 6.5). Ultre and Vapor both 6.7. A flat top is not a big jump in measured stability.
- Off-center feel in play. In our sessions the Ultre stayed more predictable than the Vapor when we were late on a speed-up and caught the ball off-center, even with the same twist weight.
Flat top vs rounded top: which to buy
Buy a flat top if you drive and counter from the middle of the court and want a bit more plow than a rounded hybrid without going to a full elongated. Buy a rounded top if you live in fast hands battles at the kitchen and want the lighter swing. The difference is real but small: about 4 points of swing weight in both pairs we measured.
The Q2 pair shows it cleanly. The Flat Top is the plow hybrid at 112. The Rounded-Top is the hands hybrid at about 108, with less twist stability than the Q2 Widebody (6.2 against 6.9). RPM Q2 Hybrid Flat Top 16mm: the one most players should buy
The Q2 Hybrid Flat Top is our top-ranked flat-top hybrid. It has the firm, connected Q2 full-foam feel, not the muted pillow a lot of foam paddles have, and drives pay you for a full swing. At 112 swing weight it is heavier in the hand than the 107 Q2 Widebody, so the kitchen is a little more work. It is $249.99, or $212.49 with code PRH at rpmpb.com/PRH, and the Q2 family is USAP approved.
Buy it if you want one paddle that drives harder than a rounded hybrid and still plays doubles. Skip it if your hands are your weapon; that is the Rounded-Top.
11SIX24 Ultre Power 2: most spin, but UPA-A only
The Ultre Power 2 spins the hardest of the group at about 2,381 RPM and has the heaviest swing at 115.15. Its 5.75" handle is the longest here, which suits a two-handed backhand. The HexGrit face is spin durability Tier 1 (under 5% spin loss) in independent lab testing. It is $209.99, or $199.99 with code PRH.
The catch is approval: it is UPA-A only, not USAP approved. If you play USA Pickleball sanctioned events, buy one of the RPM flat tops instead.
RPM Friction Pro V2 Hybrid Flat Top, 16mm or 14mm: the spin face in a flat top
The Friction Pro V2 Hybrid Flat Top 16mm is a different RPM line from the Q2: an Axial Carbon and CarbonBite face over a foam-assisted core with an EVA ring, not Q2 full foam. Buy it if you like the Friction Pro bite but do not want the 16.5" elongated V2. Spin runs about 2,250 to 2,300 RPM. Independent swing and twist weights are not published yet.
The 14mm version is the same outline in a thinner core: more pop and a quicker ball, less dwell on blocks and resets. Start with the 16mm unless you already like a thin, lively face. Both are $212.49 with code PRH and USAP approved.
Vatic V-Sol Tour Flash FT 16mm: the new budget-line flat top
The Tour Flash FT is the flat-top version of Vatic's Tour Flash hybrid: same Evergrit face and 16mm foam core, with the top edge squared off. USA Pickleball approved it on October 21, 2026. Vatic has not listed it on vaticpro.com yet, so there is no price, weight or handle length. The other V-Sol Tour shapes are $109.99, or $99.99 with code PRH, and PRH takes $10 off the FT too.
