Pickleball Paddle Spin Durability Tiers, Gen 4 and Spin Ratings Explained (2026)

Last updated: October 2026

Which paddles keep their spin, what Gen 4 and Elite spin mean, and every Tier 1 paddle with its code price.

QUICK ANSWER

Spin durability tiers say how much spin a paddle face keeps.

In independent lab testing, spin is measured with a ball cannon, the face takes a standard run of high-speed impacts, and spin is measured again. Tier 1 lost under 5%, Tier 2 lost 5% to 9.9%, Tier 3 lost 10% to 19.9%, and Tier 4 lost 20% or more. Tier 1 paddles include the 11SIX24 Power 2 and Jelly Bean 2 lines, Honolulu J2CR, J3CR and J6CR Crystal Blue, the Six Zero Coral Pro line, Spartus P1 Hybrid and Standard, and the Vatic V-Sol Tour line. Our reviews also show Gen (Gen 4 is a full foam core) and spin class from the RPM we list (Elite is 2,300 RPM and up). Every Tier 1 paddle is listed below with its price after code.

Paddle generations: Gen 2, Gen 3, Gen 4 and Gen 4.5

  • Gen 2: a thermoformed paddle, heat-sealed into one piece around a polypropylene honeycomb core. Crisp and powerful.
  • Gen 3: the honeycomb core with foam added, usually around the edge or injected into the core, for more stability and a softer feel.
  • Gen 4: a full foam core with no honeycomb. Most of the paddles people want in 2026 are Gen 4: more pop, more dwell and a bigger sweet spot.
  • Gen 4.5: the brand's own label for multi-density foam (Honolulu uses it for the J2CR, J6CR and J3CR families).

Spin classes: Elite, Good and Fair

  • Elite spin: 2,300 RPM and up.
  • Good spin: 2,100 to 2,299 RPM.
  • Fair spin: under 2,100 RPM.
  • RPM is the number we list on each review. A paddle with no published RPM gets no spin badge.

Spin durability tiers: Tier 1 to Tier 4

  • Tier 1: under 5% spin loss. The face barely fades.
  • Tier 2: 5% to 9.9% loss. Holds its texture with a small, gradual drop.
  • Tier 3: 10% to 19.9% loss. A noticeable drop in spin over time.
  • Tier 4: 20% or more loss. The face loses a fifth or more of its bite.
  • Tiers come from independent lab testing: spin measured with a ball cannon, the face put through a standard run of high-speed impacts, then spin measured again. A paddle without a tier on our site has not been through that test yet.

Durable grit

The Durable grit badge means the face uses a named grit surface the brand builds to keep its texture longer than a plain carbon face: Crystal Blue, ArmorGrit, HexGrit, PermaGrit, SICmatrix, DiamondGrit, EverGrit, Space Dust, Nanograph Grit, InfiniGrit or DuraSpin. Every carbon face loses some bite with play; these surfaces are built to slow that down. Wipe any face between games to keep its grip.
